Our Rhino Connection plugin is here! You now have the capability of bringing your CAD designs into Rhinoceros 3D (aka Rhino).

Much like our SketchUp plugin, our Rhino Connection allows you to import your 2D design into a 3D model while maintaining your exact placements and dimensions from CAD. We decided to give you early access to this exciting new tool available as a beta version.

Why beta, and what does it mean for you?

We're so excited about our Rhino plugin that we wanted to give it to you as soon as possible, as a beta version. What does that mean for you? It means you have the chance to be part of the development process. Although we won't be able to offer full support for the Rhino plugin, you'll be able to help us discover and work out some of the inevitable kinks.

As with all our products, we invite you to send us a technical support ticket to let us know about any issues you encounter. Keep in mind that our development team will likely need more time than usual to build a solution.

Get help from other users

Although we will provide as much assistance as possible, it's always a good idea to reach out to other Land F/X users who, like you, have chosen to be pioneers in the Rhino frontier. We encourage you to use the Rhino Plugin section of our Community Forum to ask questions. Another user may very well have run into the same issue and may be able to help. Forum posts tend to factor prominently in beta releases, and we want to make sure you're covered.

Prerequisites

Rhino installed (support for 6 for Windows).

Reuse your existing Boot Camp installation. ►Have Boot Camp? ►Need Windows for Mac? If you need Windows, you’ll be prompted to download and install Windows 10 or choose your existing Windows, Linux, Ubuntu, or Boot Camp® installation. Parallels mac management for microsoft sccm youtube.

Note: Rhino is a separate program you need to purchase and download from Robert McNeel & Associates.

How to install the Rhino plugin

Our Rhino plugin is only available for Windows machines at this time. Here's how to install it:

1. Right-click the installer link below.

2. Select Save Link As or Save Target As from the menu. Save the file to your desktop.

3. Locate the Landfx.rhi file on your desktop, and run it.

4. Install for Just Me.

5. Open Rhino.

The Land F/X 3D Connection toolbar should now be visible. It may be floating anywhere on your desktop screen. You can move it and dock it into Rhino at this time.

  • If the toolbar is visible, continue with steps 6 and 7 below.
  • If the toolbar is not visible, follow the steps to Load the 3D Connection Toolbar Manually first, then return here and continue to step 6.

6. Download the latest Land F/X Rhino Library (linked below).

Unzip the downloaded file LandFX-Rhino-Library.zip, which will result in a folder named Library.

Copy this Library folder to your library location. How to set your Rhino Library location

  • Single-user install: We recommend creating a folder named Rhino in the location C:/Landfx and then copying the Rhino Library folder to that location.
  • Multi-user install: We recommend creating a folder named Rhino on a shared mapped drive, ideally in your Landfx folder, and then copying the Rhino Library folder to that location.

7. Assign your Support ID.
Installing as a student? You might qualify for our Academic License program.

Known issues:

  • You may need to re-run the Toolbar command every time you open Rhino and want to use the Land F/X tools. It may not repopulate in your available tools automatically after you've closed Rhino.
  • Plants coming into Rhino without materials when you use the plugin? If so, just re-link the materials. More information

Load the 3D Connection Toolbar Manually (If Necessary)

You only need to complete these steps if you were unable to see the 3D Connection toolbar in Step 5 of the How to Install the Rhino Plugin steps above.

1. Run the Toolbar command.

2. If Landfx is present, right-click and click Close.

3. In the same window, select File > Open.

4. Navigate the %appdata% folder on your computer – example: C:usersUSERNAME%appdata% (where USERNAME is your actual username on your computer).

5. Navigate to the path for your version of Rhino:

  • Rhino 6: %appdata%RoamingMcNeelRhinoceros6.0Plug-insLandfx (b0fd0902-0021-4189-9ec2-a746dc5fa8ba)1.1.0.0Landfxlandfx.rui

6. Select the .rui file.

7. Landfx should now be loaded again. Click OK, and the toolbar should pop up.

8. Continue with Step 6: Download the latest Land F/X Rhino Library of the How to Install the Rhino Plugin steps above.

Update the Rhino plugin

Updates are not yet available through the plugin. Until further notice, check back into this page for updates. Update notices will be posted on the Rhino Plugin section of our Community Forum. You can subscribe for notices there.

In the meantime, to update our Rhino plugin:

1.Uninstall your existing version of the Rhino plugin.

2. Run the latest Landfx.rhi installer, and repeat the toolbar install steps.

3. Run the Toolbar command.

10. Check whether you have the latest Land F/X Rhino Library. If not, download it using the link below.

If you downloaded the latest library, unzip the downloaded file LandFX-Rhino-Library.zip, which will result in a folder named Library.

Uninstall the Rhino plugin

To uninstall our Rhino plugin:

1. Navigate to the folder C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingMcNeelRhinocerosVERSIONPlug-ins.

2. Delete the folder Landfx (b0fd0902-0021-4189-9ec2-a746dc5fa8ba).

This is a big step forward for Rhino 5.0 users as McNeel & Associates work on it since 2012.

The official information from McNeel & Associates about Rhinoceros 6.0:

  • Test Rhinoceros 6.0 yourself for 90 days. This is a fully functional demo version.
  • Rhino 6 for Mac will hopefully be released later this year. Rhino 6 will then be the same for both Mac and Windows operating systems. You buy one Rhino 6 and decide yourself on which operating system you like to install it.
  • Current Rhino for Mac users can already download and use the free Rhino 6 for Mac “Work In Progress” (WIP) version. Then you are also able to save and open files in Rhino 6 format.
  • New Rhino for Mac users or people who like to purchase an extra license, can preferably purchase a Rhino 6 for Windows license and convert it to a Rhino 5 for Mac which will fluently update for free to a Rhino 6 for Mac when it becomes available. This is the cheapest solution as you don’t need to buy an upgrade to Rhino 6 at a later time. It works like this:
    • Then download, install and validate this license on a Windows computer. We can do this for you at RhinoCentre if you like.
    • After that you generate here your Rhino 5 for Mac license key for free. This is only possible with a validated Rhino 6 license.
    • And finally download and install your Rhino 5 for Mac.

Rhino 6.0 is the result of an open development with Rhino 5 users and therefore totally stable. This also explains why it took McNeel more than five years to deliver an upgrade. They want to make sure that a new Rhino is stable and a big improvement. At RhinoCentre we work now for more than a year with Rhino 6 because it is much faster than Rhino 5. Especially with huge 3D files and processing large AutoCAD drawings like general arrangement plans in the maritime industry.

As we work extensively with Rhino at RhinoCentre in projects for our clients, we have a clear idea where Rhino excels and where it is still disappointing. Due to our extensive contact with clients we also have a clear vision where clients can make big improvements in using Rhino in their workflow.

Visual scripting with Grasshopper is now fully integrated in Rhino 6 and makes Rhino much more intelligent. At RhinoCentre we work with Grasshopper since 2008. Grasshopper makes it possible to script Rhino commands without the need for programming by typing code in for eaxmple Python. This makes programming with Grasshopper so easy for people who are visually oriented like many designers.

  • Design concepts that are flexilbe parameterized for design studies. See for example our free script for generating ship hulls or the script for a design of a bridge.
  • Stupid repetitive work can also be automated. For example, it would take a lot of time and effort to model the planks of the lapstrake hull of a Viking ship. Not to mention editing this 3D model when the hull shape has changed. Now the script does all the boring work for me.

Presentations

We also use Rhino a lot for internal or external presentations. Especially in the design- and engineering phase there is often little time to put a lot of effort in it. Therefore we often just make a few screenshots instead of a starting up a time consuming render procedure. In Rhino 6 we found big improvements in creating very attractive images in little time:

  • The new display pipeline of Rhino makes the viewports faster and more attractive. It is now also GPU based:
    • Zooming, panning and rotating is much faster with large 3D models and heavy AutoCAD drawings.
    • The ‘realtime rendered viewport’ is much more attractive for making presentations with a screenshot or the default Rhino render. That is why there is less need to work with a render plugin. We experience in our projects that creating quick presentations take less time and look more professional.
  • New tools to manipulate a render mesh to make it look more realistic. As a surface in Rhino often doesn’t have a thickness, it is now very easy to add thickness to the render mesh. This makes it appear much more realistic. Other features are for example edge softening which also adds realism to objects as rounded edges result in a glossy appearance. And yes, this is very noticable!
  • Quickly create screenshots in a flexible way with the renewed _ViewCaptureToFile command.
  • The default Rhino Render now creates much more attractive images. This makes it less necessary to use a render plugin like Flamingo or V-Ray.

Rhino 6 offers much more functionality for making 2D drawings. This is especially interesting for companies who like to avoid using AutoCAD and still need workshop drawings.

  • Many more features for annotations.
  • Make2D is programmed from the ground up again and therefore much faster and more stable. This is especially interesting for those who need 2D drawings out of larger and more complex 3d models.
