I bought a MacBook Pro and installed Windows 7 with Boot Camp Assistant so I could access the “normal” Excel. This was important to me at the time because I was doing Excel development work in versions 2003, 2007 and 2010 on a Windows PC.

Symptoms I have a Microsoft Excel file with macroses which successfully works on a real PC, but fails to run in a Parallels virtual machine. Cause Most probably you have this file stored on Mac host operating system and access it from inside of Windows. Parallels keeps opening my Excel files with Windows, even though I have Office 2004 for Mac. Ive changed the file assocation by right-clicking the file and choosing File Info, Open with, Change All. Ive done this a number of times, and Parallels keeps changing it. As a work-around, Mac owners are using Excel for Windows on their Mac by running Windows as a virtual machine through Parallels Desktop 7. With Parallels, you can run two different operating systems (iOS and Windows) at the same time, on the same computer. I purchased the Mac versions of Excel (2008 and 2011) but they seem like a mixture of the three Excel versions mentioned above, and can be very frustrating at times. There are a few things missing in the latest Excel Mac version, like the Name Manager and the Evaluate Formula dialog box, to name just two.

Despite these shortcomings, I’m seriously thinking about selling my desktop PC and going exclusively with the Mac. That’s the crossroads I’m at right now. Letting go of the PC, but keeping the Windows versions of Excel.

My Hangups

BootCamp allows me to run Windows, and the Excel versions I need, but is very restrictive in the sense that I have to shut down my Mac, then restart with BootCamp to run Windows 7. This is a real pain in the you-know-what.

There are other problems with running Windows on a Mac. For instance, I haven’t been able to get my Apple Magic Mouse to work with Windows 7. (Go figure.) And using Dropbox was the best way to get Excel files between Windows 7 and Mac OS X.

My Saving Grace

All of those issues were solved when I purchased the Parallels Desktop software for Mac. Now I can switch to Windows without having to shut down Mac OS X Lion. That’s just plain awesome!

I’m still getting used to how Parallels works, but this software is easily worth the purchase price. And my Apple Magic Mouse, just works.

Parallels Desktop on my MacBook Pro

Here’s a screen shot of the Parallels Desktop open on my MacBook Pro. You can see that I have Microsoft 2010 (Windows) open, but I want you to notice that I also have the Finder dialog box open.

I dragged the Card Size Lookup.xlsx file from Finder onto the Excel 2010 (Windows) program and it opened. I then made a change to the spreadsheet and saved it. The file was saved back on my Mac from whence it came. This is the miracle of modern technology.

I still have lots of testing to do but it looks like the Parallels Desktop has made my life much, much easier. I know now which way to turn at the crossroads.

I want to run it on a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. The spreadsheet contains VBA macros which connect to external Oracle db's over the Internet.

If I understand correctly, Excel on the Mac doesn't run VBA macros, so I have to use Parallels. I installed Parallels on the Mac and it's running correctly, as far as I can tell. I installed Excel 2007 under Parallels.

I can open the Excel spreadsheet in Parallels and click buttons in the spreadsheet to run macros, but the macros fail with compiler errors. I don't have the password to the source code for the VBA macros, and if possible, I don't want to dig in to the code at that level.

I know that there are quite a few things that could go wrong, and examining the VBA code might help, but I'm hoping to solve the problem without going down that road. The spreadsheet runs without any special configuration on Windows, so I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any limitations of Excel VBA macros under Parallels, or anything else I could do to get this spreadsheet working.

It's the only thing that's keeping me from using this MacBook Pro at work.

This error commonly occurs when code is incompatible with the version or architecture of this application (for example, code in a document targets 32-bit Microsoft Office applications but it is attempting to run on 64-bit Office).

The error is raised when a compilation error exists in the VBA code inside a protected (hidden) module. The specific compilation error is not exposed because the module is protected.

Possible solutions:

If you have access to the VBA code in the document or project, unprotect the module, and then run the code again to view the specific error.

If you do not have access to the VBA code in the document, then contact the document author to have the code in the hidden module updated.

Was the macro originally writen in Office 2007 as well?

Does the Parallels installation match on of your setups where the macro does work in terms of 32bit/64bit?

Apart from those two general questions I'd begin with the network aspect of things since you wrote

How about network settings within Parallels - are other macros or network-depending features of Office (e.g. the help-section often suggest to search online) able to connect to your network or the internet?

Those are the question I'd start with.

Parallel Software For Mac

Since it sounds like you are failing at the database connection level, you need to find out how the VBA source is connecting to the Oracle database. Is the VBA code calling a DSN connection? Is the DSN set up in Windows? Is it using Oracle drivers? Do you need JDBC? There could be long list of how the code connects to Oracle. Without this info, you mostl likely solve the issue.
